Simple Living Maya Bedroom Set

a bedroom for rover :A Bedroom for Rover, Maybe Even a Condo

The moment I laid eyes on Daffodil, I vowed I would give her a good home.

I found her at an adoption event for more than 50 rescued rabbits, sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals two winters ago. A Silver rabbit, Daffodil looked more like a wild hare than any domestic bunny I’d ever seen, and I was instantly smitten.

Once my adoption application was approved, I scooped Daffy up, jumped in a cab and headed uptown to my one-bedroom apartment in Harlem, prepared to give her the best “forever home” possible.

First and foremost, that meant giving her all the space, freedom and companionship she would need. In other words, no cage, plenty of room to roam and, soon, a new best friend: Daisy, a two-and-a-half-pound Himalayan rabbit I adopted three months later from the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine in Manhattan.

And so I set to work turning a 4-by-9-foot walk-in closet outside my bedroom into a bunny room. I filled it with plenty of hiding spots, toys, litter boxes (domestic rabbits can be litter box-trained), a bi-level bunny condo and a little four-poster bed. I painted grass and flowers on the walls and hung art. I hoped all of this would make the room feel warm and safe to the bunnies.

It felt like the obvious thing to do for any loved one under my roof, four-legged or not. In fact, it seemed so natural that I began to wonder what other kinds of dedicated pet spaces animal lovers might have made for their pets. If I, with my limited funds and square footage, had devoted a room — albeit a very small one — to my furry friends, what kinds of over-the-top spaces were animal enthusiasts with larger budgets creating for their pets?

With a little research, I discovered such efforts could range from a living room wall transformed into a cat jungle gym to an entire studio apartment dedicated to a family of pets, including three parrots, a feral cat and a 35-year-old tortoise. Many animal lovers in New York and beyond, it seems, think nothing of the cost involved in creating a special space for their pets — even when that sort of customization might cut into the profits when it comes time to sell their homes.

Hunt Slonem, an artist celebrated for his whimsical paintings of animals (particularly bunnies), carved 1,200 square feet out of his 30,000-square-foot studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, for his bird family.

Mr. Slonem has kept birds as pets for most of his life, and he currently has about 60 of them, all rescues, including a 75-year-old macaw called Sebastian and a cockatoo named Clyde that follows him everywhere.

The space he has devoted to the birds features dozens of suspended cages, often left open so the birds can fly free, and tile imported from Nicaragua that Mr. Slonem said helps to “define the space and stylishly conceal the droppings.”

Inside this indoor avian community, Mr. Slonem’s birds are free to talk, spat and mate — some for life, as they see fit. The space is so open and accommodating that many of the more social birds, including a close-knit clique of Amazon parrots, make regular house calls to each other’s cages. Feeding the birds, which takes up to five hours a day, requires the full-time services of a professional bird minder who has worked for Mr. Slonem for 35 years and who serves them a fresh salad of leafy greens, melons, bananas, grapes and tofu.

In Mr. Slonem’s latest book, “Birds,” he describes them as his muses and confidantes. He regularly paints among them, and whenever he is within earshot of the aviary, he said, the birds begin to chant his name in unison. “They’re as smart as three-year-olds,” Mr. Slonem said. “And they have huge personalities. They’re my dear friends, a relief from the humdrum of life.”

While Mr. Slonem shares his sprawling studio with the birds, he hasn’t given up any of his own living space. But other New Yorkers have.

In New York by Gehry building in Manhattan, Lucy Swift Weber’s 10-year-old Yorkie, Chauncey, is recovering from cancer. When things got particularly rough last year, Ms. Weber decided to convert the guest bedroom in her two-bedroom apartment into Chauncey’s room, to “give him the space to heal.”

Along with an en-suite bathroom — good for quick water refills and easy cleanup — the dog’s bedroom has a set of customized pet stairs, a plush floor-pillow lounge and a six-foot-tall headboard that Ms. Weber upholstered in a fabric she designed herself. “It’s become this warm, comfortable world where Chauncey can relax and rehabilitate,” Ms. Weber said. “I tried to make the room both calming and cheerful enough that he would want to spend time there, and it worked. He’s in there all of the time by choice.”

But even once he is in better health, Ms. Weber said, Chauncey will continue to have a room of his own; she and her boyfriend just moved into a larger, three-bedroom apartment on another floor of the same building, so that her boyfriend’s college-age sons won’t have to sleep in Chauncey’s room when they visit.

Caroline Stern, who owns three condos on the same floor of her building on Central Park West, went a step further and dedicated an entire 650-square-foot studio to her pets, where they can sleep and roam free when they’re not with her.

Next door to Ms. Stern’s apartment, the pet condo is home to three parrots — Apricot, Sinbad and Roxanne (a Moluccan cockatoo that serves as an emotional support animal) — a feral cat named Butch and an Russian tortoise named Alberta.

To accommodate these animals, Ms. Stern filled the condo with hand-built oversized aviaries, towering bird trees and an ultraviolet-lightedreptile area with a special water bath for Alberta. “Birds are loud,” Ms. Stern said. “It’s comforting to have a soothing place to put them when I can’t deal with the screaming.”

Ms. Stern’s neighbors are more than aware of her pet condo, but for the most part, she said, they are more charmed than perturbed. “It’s an animal-friendly building,” she said. “People stop by to visit; they know they’re lucky pets.”

Such devotion raises an obvious question: When designing extravagant spaces for pets, is property value even worth taking into consideration? As adorable as some of these animal rooms are, they often come at a hefty real estate cost.

“Whether it’s for a person or a parrot, customizing a property always makes it more difficult to sell,” said Ryan Serhant, of Nest Seeker’s Serhant Team. “An animal-dedicated space makes it even more challenging, because they often leave behind lingering smells and damaged surfaces that scare prospective buyers into thinking they’d have to renovate.”

There are, however, less expensive and less intrusive ways to create inviting pet habitats.

In Penfield, N.Y., Jill Sanders sacrificed a single wall in her 15-foot-wide living room to accommodate Nadia, a one-year-old Siberian cat she has been fostering for the last seven months and plans to adopt. Three months ago, when Mrs. Sanders decided to bring home two puppies, she knew she would have to get creative to keep Nadia comfortable. So she called on Mike Wilson and Megan Hanneman, founders of Catastrophic Creations, to devise a dedicated space for Nadia along the living room wall, where the cat could play and escape from the dogs when necessary.

More than 10 feet tall and five feet off the ground, the cat playground is composed of several floating sisal post steps, scratching posts, landing shelves, canvas hammocks and a rope bridge. “Everyone that sees it is blown away by its design-savviness,” Mrs. Sanders said. “I just wanted to give her something that brought her as much joy as she brings our family.”

And in Chicago, Guita Griffiths enlisted the help of Shelley Johnstone, of Shelley Johnstone Design, to create a practical but comforting place for Margaux, her 70-pound yellow Labrador retriever, in her 110-square-foot mudroom.

“Margaux’s a big dog,” Mrs. Griffiths said. “We needed a space to keep her when guests came over, where she wouldn’t feel trapped or anxious.” The result is a 5-by-8-foot space devoted entirely to the 3-year-old dog.

a bedroom without windows:11 Ways To Work With A Windowless Room

They say you never know what you had till it’s gone, and that’s certainly true for windows. When dealing with a windowless room, you really start to miss the natural light and appreciate the openness they bring. But whether you’re planning a little corrective construction or just a quick fix, there are plenty of ways to bring that same feeling to your basement, den, kitchen and more.

8 Cost-Effective Ways to Get a High-End Look

1. Mirrors. Adding a large mirror to your wall is one of the first ways to simulate the effect of a window, not just for bouncing some light but also for adding a sense of depth that breaks up claustrophobic wall planes. In a space with a low-ceiling, use as large a mirror as possible, reaching close to the ceiling (but not all the way up; stop 4 to 6 inches below) to distract from the ceiling line.

2. White walls. White (or very pale blue) walls help simulate the fresh, full-spectrum sparkle of natural sunlight, while subtly reflecting light from every source for the brightest look possible. Choosing one color for the walls and ceiling also helps the edges float away, so encroaching walls are not the focal point; rather, the items within earn the attention.

3. Large art. Similar to a mirror, a large art piece (especially one in a white or metallic frame with a lot of white background) breaks up walls like a window would and brings in a snap of lightness for those who don’t like white as a floor-to-ceiling color.

4. French doors. Adding windows to a doorway (by converting to French doors) also gives the eye that sense of peeking out into a space beyond, and lets a new ambient light source in, even if the adjacent “room” is simply a pantry. Add a few lights inside or a single ceiling fixture (with a cool fluorescent bulb), and the hint of light pouring out will give the illusion of daylight.

5. Hidden lights. Tucking a few lights where they can’t be seen helps give your room a sense of an indirect glow that mimics light pouring in from a nearby window. Try placing lamps between beams, behind furniture (such as behind a sofa) or tucked next to a bookcase to make the light source more mysterious.

6. Transoms. Another architectural way to add a nonspecific light source is to add a window between a room and an adjacent space (especially if the next room over has natural light to share). Placed high enough, a transom window (technically, “transom” is the term for the piece of wall dividing a window and the door below) will open a space to new light without compromising privacy.

A transom window over a mirror can also help bring some extra light into a shower space for a little sense of morning sun with the morning routine.

7. Internal windows. In a condo or townhouse where external windows cannot be added, full-size windows between living spaces (where privacy is not as important) can really open a space and allow light to be shared between them in a major way. Plus, you can always add a drapery or shade treatment to close off the view when necessary.

8. Frosted glass. In a kitchen, adding a pass-through allows not just food to be passed out but light to flow in, without completely exposing any dirty dishes to prying eyes. Filling in a pass-through with a frosted panel like this one is another excellent option for keeping kitchen clutter out of sight while letting light filter in.

9. Undercabinet lighting. In a totally windowless kitchen, undercabinet lights are not only functional for task lighting, but they also help lighten the edges of the room so you don’t feel like you’re taking a time-out in a dark corner every time you make a meal. Especially when upper cabinets close in the space further, it’s key to add lightness and depth anywhere you can.

10. Ceiling exposures. This room has a window, you say? It’s true, there is a window on the wall, but the level below might not have one. That’s when the see-through ceiling is a good option. If you’re feeling brave during a renovation, adding an (architecturally approved, of course) window panel to the flooring can brighten and open the level below dramatically.

11. Full-wall drapery. Want to create the effect of a window without opening up? A full wall of drapery creates a beautiful backdrop to a bed and implies a sense of depth beyond, even if you never pull back the curtain.

A Bedroom In The Wee Hours of The Morning

A Bedroom In The Wee Hours of The Morning

Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father’s family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen’s grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.

Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.

He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men’s magazines.

Stephen made his first professional short story sale (“The Glass Floor”) to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men’s magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shiftcollection or appeared in other anthologies.

In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

Bed Bugs On Bed

Bed bugs are smart enough to hide but too dumb to clean up the evidence of their bloodthirsty crimes. These careless clues are the best indicator your room is overrun with bed bugs since secondary signs of bed bug infestation are visible both night and day:

Cast/shed bed bug skins, exoskeletons or shells
Fecal stains on your mattress and bedding
Blood stains on your sheets and pajamas
A clear bed bug shell is actually the exoskeleton, which is shed as the bed bug grows larger.

Bed Bugs On Bed

Bed bug fecal stains differ from blood stains. As bedbugs.net points out:

“Because bed bugs generally feast on the blood of their hosts, creeping out of hiding places at night to latch on, some people think that fecal stains from the insects should at least be tinged with the color of blood. This is not, in fact, the case. Fecal spotting tends to resemble smears or stains, which are dark brown or even black. This is because the blood has been digested and excreted.”

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A BED BUG BITE

The most telltale sign of a bed bug problem isn’t the bed bug’s bite. As the United States Environmental Protection Agency points out:

“Bites on the skin are a poor indicator of a bed bug infestation. Bed bug bites can look like bites from other insects (such as mosquitoes or chiggers), rashes (such as eczema or fungal infections) or even hives. Some people do not react to bed bug bites at all.”

The percentage of people who do not react to bed bug bites is commonly stated as 70%, but a lengthy discussion as to why this is wrong rages on. The new evidence implies that “repeated exposure” to bed bug bites is the key to whether or not you react to the anesthetic in the bed bug’s saliva. In other words, if you have bed bug bites, treatment requires more than just stopping the itching. You have to get rid of the infestation as well.

LOOK FOR THESE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A BED BUG BITE:

Raised, red welts
Burning and itching
Bed bug bite rash across localized area
Straight lines of multiple bites
Check out these pictures of bed bug bites from American Family Physician, showing the characteristic wheals (temporary raised, red, itchy welts) and clusters associated with the aftermath of a feeding.

SUSPICIOUS BUGS CREEPING AROUND

Despite the ongoing bed bug epidemic, many people still don’t know what a bed bug even looks like. This University of Minnesota extension page does a good job explaining the complexities of finding live bed bugs considering their changing stages of life, saying:

“…eggs hatch in about six to 10 days and the newly emerged bed bug nymphs seek a blood meal. Immature nymphs molt five times (i.e., they shed their outer exoskeletons in order to grow) before reaching adulthood. They need to feed at least once before each molt, although they could feed as often as once a day. There may be three or more generations per year.”

You can see pictures of bed bugs in their various stages over at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, but keep in mind that bed bugs are nocturnal. Identifying bed bugs during the day requires a bit of good or bad luck (depending on your view) and some persistence.

Take the sheets off your bed and look at the edges, crevices and piping of your mattress. Bed bugs are flat, almond-shaped, reddish-brown and very tiny. Look in the box spring and check for various sizes and stages, from bed bug eggs to adults. Varying size also applies to secondary signs of infestation (i.e., cast/shed skins).

HOW TO TREAT BED BUG BITES

Now that you know the signs of a bed bug infestation, here’s how to get rid of bed bug bites. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you see a dermatologist if you have multiple bites, blisters, oozing, pus or any other signs of a severe allergic reaction or infection. Otherwise, their recommended bed bug bite treatment is:

“Wash the bites with soap and water. This will help prevent a skin infection and help reduce itchiness. If the bites itch, apply a corticosteroid cream to the bites. You can get a weak form of this medicine without a prescription at your local drugstore. Stronger corticosteroids require a prescription.”

Unfortunately, learning how to get rid of bed bug bites involves much more than simply stopping the itch. Before your existing bites even begin to fade, new bites will appear as the infestation grows. To put an end to bed bug bites, treatment actually means eradicating the pests wherever they cower and hide. Terminix can help. Click here to schedule your bed bug inspection.

Standard bed sizes rely on upon standard sheet material sizes, which move from country to country. Bed sizes also vary as shown by the size and level of ornamentation of the bed diagram. Full or twofold

54 in × 75 in (137 cm × 191 cm)

Ruler

60 in × 80 in (152 cm × 203 cm)

Ruler

76 in × 80 in (193 cm × 203 cm)

An additional vast bed may have a gigantic box spring (foundation), or two humbler box-springs (each the measure of a Twin XL bed) under an additional huge resting cushion.

It is noteworthy that “bed measure” in the UK all things considered implies resting cushion evaluate. This is in light of the fact that resting cushions have a standard size surveying, while bed diagrams don’t. While numerous associations in the UK do offer bespoke bed making organizations, most mass-conveyed bed materials, bed housings and resting pads fit only the standard bed sizes above. It should be seen that a Ruler measure resting cushion in the UK is habitually confounded to be one of the greater sizes simply like the case in various diverse parts of the world. Regardless, at 120cm in width, it is more diminutive than a UK twofold. Another fundamental blunder is to use a dozing cushion measure as the required space for the full estimations of the curious little motel.

You will probably require more space for this set up given that it’s truly intended to be in the focal point of the room (or possibly far from the divider). Up until now, I have observed the normal cost to be around $3,000. Remember you should purchase bedding, also.
